On the 22nd of April in Dhaka The Bagha Club hosted a special evening to raise funds for the Irish Rovers. There was an excellent band featuring well known Irish Rovers, Jim Upritchard and John Wallace, and an auction of sporting memorabilia from across the globe. However, the whole event was almost washed away by an epic tropical storm which flooded the Bagha club within about 10 minutes of the band taking to the outdoor stage. However, the Irish Rovers refused to be put off and a plan B was quickly developed to move the whole event indoors until the rain went off. Remarkably, with the help of the Bagha club staff and members the band were able to retake the stage outdoors within a short time of the storm passing over. This was to prove to be the beginning of a memorable and successful night. The band rocked the Bagha crowd of more than 200 people with songs by BB King, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Elmore James, Carl Perkins and Bob Dylan. The sporting auction was conducted by the finest and most entertaining auctioneer in Dhaka, Mr John Wallace. The magnificent support from those in attendance raised a total of 270,000 taka for good causes. A fantastic night and very successful.
At present the Irish Rovers are working with a Home and School for abandoned children in Dhaka to decide how best to use the money raised. An update will appear on this page in the near future. Our thanks go to those who helped to make the night a great success.
